The Pitons are two hours from your hotel. Here is how people actually get there.
Which Soufrière day trip sits you in the mud baths and which one only drives past them. What a catamaran down the west coast costs. Whether the road back from Hewanorra is worth breaking up. Reviews of every tour you can book on Saint Lucia.
Mud baths, a deck on the west coast, the big peak and a cocoa estate.
The four bookings a first week here hangs off. What each one costs, and what the people who took it say.

Soufrière is the point of Saint Lucia. Pick your version of the day.
Every southern day out is built from the same three pieces: the peaks, the sulphur springs and a waterfall. What changes is how many you get, and whether you arrive by road or by hull.
Most people sleep in the north of Saint Lucia and spend the day elsewhere.
The marina strip, the resort belt on the headland, the fishing village that throws the Friday street party, and the cruise-port capital where the road south begins.
The Saint Lucian west coast is easier by boat than by road.
Catamarans run down from Rodney Bay with a snorkel stop off Anse Chastanet and lunch on board, then come home with the sun going down behind the peaks. The same journey by minibus is an hour and a half of hairpins each way.

Hewanorra is ninety minutes from the north of Saint Lucia, and so is Soufrière.
Almost every hotel sits in the north, almost everything worth the day sits in the south, and the road between them is narrow, slow and genuinely beautiful. Two ways to handle it: take the boat down and the road back, or hand the driving to somebody who does it daily.
What a day out on Saint Lucia actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. The island has a reputation for honeymoon money, and plenty of its best days cost less than dinner at the hotel.
Castries market mornings, the fort at Pigeon Island, a short transfer, an hour in the mud.
The standard full day: Soufrière by road, the aerial tram, the ziplines, a half-day snorkel run.

Three things that only happen on Saint Lucia.
Beaches and rum shops run the length of the Caribbean. A volcano you drive into, two peaks standing straight out of the sea, and a cocoa estate that hands you the pods do not.

The Sulphur Springs
The road drops into the caldera of a collapsed volcano and stops beside vents that still hiss and smell of rotten eggs. Downstream the run-off cools into pools of warm grey mud that people paint on, bake dry and rinse off in the stream. Nowhere else do you park, walk fifty metres and stand inside a volcano.

Gros Piton and Petit Piton
Two volcanic plugs rise straight out of the sea with a village wedged between them, which is why this bay ends up on every Caribbean list. Gros Piton is the one you climb, with a guide from the trailhead at Fond Gens Libre and about four hours of steps. Petit Piton is steeper, and mostly admired from the water.

Tree to bar on a working estate
Cocoa has grown on the slopes above Soufrière since the plantation years, and the estates now walk you through the whole thing: cut the pods, taste the wet pulp, watch the beans ferment and dry, then grind and temper a bar with your own hands. Lunch looks straight at Petit Piton.

Four Saint Lucian bookings that will not wait.
Most of this island can be arranged the night before, over a beer on the Rodney Bay strip. These four run on guides, sailing days and opening hours that take no interest in when you land.
- 01Gros Piton Hike with Dannyboy & Co.The trail only takes you up with a registered guide, and the starts go early to get the steps done before the heat.
- 02St Lucia Full-Day Catamaran Sightseeing Cruise With SnorkelingOne boat, a set number of seats, and the long west-coast run sails on fixed days rather than daily.
- 03Champagne Sunset Sail in St. LuciaA sunset sail leaves on the clock rather than on yours, and there is one boat a night in each bay.
- 04Saint Lucia Sulphur Springs Rejuvenating Mud Bath TourThe springs shut in the late afternoon, so the mud has to be built into the day rather than added to the end of it.
